Jay Field: A Brief Overview

I used to think curiosity was harmless, a simple indulgence of the mind. But it has a way of escalating. One moment you’re entertaining an idea, the next you’re deep in a film set, a classroom, or a conversation you’re only half-qualified to lead.

My first career was film. I wrote and shot short, often absurd pieces that became a showreel which I ambitiously took to India. Unsurprisingly, eight months later I left with nothing. Instead of going home, I flew to Prague where things improved.

I returned to Canada with new skills in visual effects, director credits on commercials, and several short films. For over a decade I worked as a senior visual-effects artist and short filmmaker, balancing commercial campaigns with more personal, story-driven work.

Then my son was born and I decided to become a stay-at-home father, best decision I ever made. Those first few years with my son inspired me to open an elementary school: Tamarack West Outdoor School. What began as a small outdoor classroom grew into a learning community shaped by trust, exploration, and open-ended inquiry.

Managing has never been a passion of mine, so I gravitated towards studying outside of the operational side of the school. I explored programming, looked into cyber security and became passionate about Data Analysis.

These days, I often find myself late at night working on independent data projects that I care about as deeply as I once cared about film. The medium has changed, but the underlying impulse has not. I am still exploring ideas and patterns and finding the best ways to communicate them.
